The transmission model of communication is the process of moving messages from a sender though a medium to a receiver. Much like transporting goods for example wheat the goods or message by train the medium to the receiver. This model may allow for feedback loops messages are transported from one person to another in a liner trajectory, like so
Source--> Message--> Reciver.
Based on Harold Lasswell's 1948 famously described the study of communication as a series of questions: Who / says What / to Whom/ through what channel / and with what effect? Using this model we can discuss lecturing: teacher--> information --> student.
The Culture Model
The culture model of communication draws a very close connection between the processes of social communication and the production of a common culture. Matthew Arnold put culture as "culture becomes synonymous with the whole way of life of a society of people." With each culture being unique and complex meanings of messages can be different in the Middle East or Africa or America. To be able to communicate effectively within a culture requires to be able to use language and the media of communication to be able to speak within the common or shared culture and understanding. Rather than a linear model like The Transmission Model which first isolates the message and then sends it form one place or person to another, the cultureal model emphasizes the fact that people already exist within a wold of shared meaning that they take for granted. For example rituals like a graduation or wedding are formal but emotinal public events, endlessly repedted with special meanings for the wder society that has established them.
